In the Lab: VMware HCIbench Hands On (by…

VMware’s VSAN group recently announced a free storage performance testing tool for Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI), the HCI benchmark or HCIbench . While stressing traditional arrays with I/O or bandwidth tests is fairly well understood, applying synthetic tests to HCI gear requires a careful approach and a steep learning curve. With traditional storage infrastructure you setup your I/O generator of choice with a given workload profile, point it to some LUNs and let it rip. Hyperconverged testing requires a large-scale approach where many VMs (often 10-64) simultaneously apply that workload across multiple vDisks, at the same time… not to mention collecting all of that data when the task finishes. This type of approach is…Read More

Troubleshooting vSphere PSOD

The Screen of Death, as most of us know it as, is the result of a system crash. Windows has his famous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), and VMware has a purple screen of death (PSOD). Of course there is also a Black Screen of Death, which is usually when Windows systems are missing a […]

Understanding PernixData FVP’s clustered read…

When PernixData debuted FVP back in August 2013, for me there was one innovation in particular that stood out above the rest. The ability to accelerate writes (known as “Write Back” caching) on the server side, and do so in a fault tolerant way. Leverage fast media on the server side to drive microsecond write […]

Manually preparing ESXi hosts for VMware NSX

I put this post primarily on VMGuru.com, taking you there now. Hold on to your butts. Usually when installing VMware NSX, the Update Manager takes care of ESXi host preparation. It takes a few VIB packages from the NSX Manager and pushes those to the ESXi hosts to prepare them for VXLAN, the distributed firewall and the distributed router. It can happen that this process fail, for one reason or another. For instance, if your Update Manager is on the fritz or if you don’t have an Update…Read More
