NSX at VMworld 2015

I finished off 2014 with a round of predictions about the future of network virtualization, and now I find myself preparing my VMworld® 2015 session on a similar topic. So as a preview of what I’ll be talking about in a few days (and later on at VMworld Europe), I thought it would be worth looking at how my predictions are playing out at this point in the year.

VMware NSX 6.2 goes GA

Yesterday VMware released the 6.2 version of NSX. With this release comes a whole battery of new features and a lot of fixes. This new version of NSX will support multiple vCenter instances, which in my opinion is a great addition to an already great product. Some of thenew and changed features in NSX vSphere 6.2 include the following : Cross vCenter Networking and Security NSX 6.2 with vSphere 6.0 supports Cross vCenter NSX where logical switches (LS), distributed logical routers (DLR) and…Read More

Manually preparing ESXi hosts for VMware NSX

I put this post primarily on VMGuru.com, taking you there now. Hold on to your butts. Usually when installing VMware NSX, the Update Manager takes care of ESXi host preparation. It takes a few VIB packages from the NSX Manager and pushes those to the ESXi hosts to prepare them for VXLAN, the distributed firewall and the distributed router. It can happen that this process fail, for one reason or another. For instance, if your Update Manager is on the fritz or if you don’t have an Update…Read More

What is VMware NSX?

Learn what #VMware NSX is and what it does

What is VMware NSX?

VMware NSX is the network virtualization and security platform that emerged from VMware after they acquired Nicira in 2012. This acquisition launched VMware into the software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) world. The solution de-couples the network functions from the physical devices, in a way that is analogous to de-coupling virtual servers (VMs) from physical servers. In order to de-couple the new virtual network from the traditional physical network, NSX natively re-creates the traditional network constructs in virtual space — these constructs include ports, switches, routers, firewalls, etc. In the past, everyone knew what these things were. It was possible to see and touch the switch port…Read More

Not networking, but a little gotcha that caught me out today with very slow boot times for ESXi V5.5 associated with RDM’s and MSCS configured LUN’s mounted via VPLEX. Integrating VMware NSX with VMware vRealize Log…

VMware vRealize Log Insight is a log analyser with capabilities to receive logs from regular syslog (so every device that can send syslog over the network) and from agents for Windows and Linux. Mostly every device can be configured to send logs to it and it can be used for quick and easy operation tasks, giving one a full picture of their environment. Inside Log Insight, you can install (or create your own) content packs. These content packs are a way to create dashboards with filtered data. The filtered data is usually determined by queries to the Log Insight search engine and is targeted to a specific product of which the data you want to see, for example: DRS actions, storage alerts, virtual machine snapshotting, etc. If it is logged…Read More
