VSAN 6.2 + DELL PERC: Important Certified…

As many of us rejoiced at the release of VSAN 6.2 that came with vSphere 6 Update 2…those of us running DELL PERC based storage controllers where quickly warned of a potential issues and where told to not upgrade. VMwareKB 2144614 referenced these issues and stated that the PERC H730 and FD332 found in DELL Server platforms where not certified for VSAN 6.2 pending onging investigations. The storage controllers that where impacted are listed below.

Generating vCenter Server & Platform Services…

A really useful capability that vCenter Server used to provide was a feature called vCenter Maps. I say “used to” because this feature was only available when using the vSphere C# Client and was not available in the vSphere Web Client. vCenter Maps provided a visual representation of your vCenter Server inventory along with the different relationships between your Virtual Machines, Hosts, Networks and Datastores. There were a variety of use cases for this feature but it was especially useful when it came to troubleshooting storage or networking connectivity. An administrator could quickly identify if they had an ESXi host that was not connected to the right datastore for example with just a few clicks.

Load Balancing vSphere Clusters with DRS

Load Balancing vSphere Clusters with DRS

Recently, a customer reported that DRS was not working to load balance the cluster. Under normal circumstances, a minor imbalance is nothing to be concerned about. This is because the main objective for DRS is not to balance the load perfectly across every host. Rather, DRS monitors the resource demand and works to ensure that every VM is getting the resources entitled. When DRS determines that a better host exists for the VM, it make a recommendation to move that VM.

This will be a series of post covering more advanced vSphere concepts in depth and different design considerations that we need to take care before the implementation. This post will be an introduction to Hardware design considerations that we must oblige too. All the hardware compatibilities are listed in VMware Compatibility Guide Tool which is best source.

Log Insight + Netflow = Awesome part 2

In my first blog post Log Insight + Netflow = Awesome I show cased that Log Insight could be used to ingest netflows and showed some graphics and talked about possible extensions the data found into other products such as vRealize Operations or NSX. I got some comments from people who wanted to learn more, but instead of me keep answering the same questions, I have posted what and how on to github. This marks the first github project that I have created. So even though this is not even half baked, not thought through and very much just for showcasing the possibilities with Log Insight, I have made it publicly available, so that every one can have a go at it. Hopefully in time this will become much more useful.

Which Blog is Your Favorite TOP vBlog 2016?

As in previous years, Eric Siebert with vSphere-land.com is organizing a TOP vBlog voting competition and my blog, ESX Virtualization blog, is participating. I try to do a bit of everything, but staying as accurate as possible. Readers can vote and determine which virtualization blog they prefer to read through the year. Some readers might prefer deep-dive, or how-to topics only where others want to read news or watch videos.

In the 1990s, I saw the dawn of the internet. I experienced the rush of hopes and dreams and possibilities. The tech bubbles, the mad scientists, the boisterous personalities that were larger than life. In the 90’s, we were living in the dreams of pioneers and frauds, cyberpunks and techno-anarchists.

I’ve been working on some different things lately and wanted to share with you a tool I used to help verify data. Whilst I am not ready to reveal all that I am working on I have had the requirement to return the following information about a Virtual Machine – Name, IP Address, MAC Address, Attached Network, Power State, VMtools status, and the VMtools version.

VMware NSX 6.2 Beginners Guide – From Zero to…

VMware NSX is the SDDC technology of the future. What ESX was once for Servers, NSX is now for Networks. I highly encourage everyone to make yourselves familiar with this technology. NSX with all its features is quite complex, but the entry point is quite simple and requires only basic vSphere and networking skills. This beginners guide explains how to deploy NSX in your homelab even with limited physical ressources by downsizing NSX Manager and NSX Controller VMs. The guide starts at zero and quickly explains how to deploy NSX and connect your first Virtual Machine to a VXLAN based logical switch that is able to communicate to the physical world through an NSX Edge Gateway.

There’s no question about it: Network Virtualization is the future. As virtualization moves in to replace the hardware-centric networks of yesterday and today, the most sought after IT practitioners will be those who know Network Virtualization inside and out. Attention IT Recruiters – VCDX | VCIX | VCAP |…

There has been some discussion in the vExpert Slack channel over the last couple of days discussing how the vExpert Program which is an advocacy program that VMware awards to engaged members of the community was more recognized than actual VMware based certifications including the coveted VCDX. Without diminishing the value of the vExpert Program, this has been discussed in many circles for a while now and generally revolves around the fact the the VCAP exams are almost non existent when it comes to desirable certifications on resumes. Even the VCDX seems to be generally relegated to a “Explain what a VCDX is and aren’t vExperts the Virtulization Experts of choice?” conversation.

Monitoring vCenter Health Remotely with…

In Part 1 of this blog, I discussed how you can monitor vCenter’s vPostgres database remotely using Blue Medora’s Management Pack for PostgreSQL. For those of you with larger environments with Oracle or MS SQL databases supporting vCenter, you’ll want to monitor those as well. In this blog I’ll step through how one can monitor a Microsoft SQL server remotely using vRealize Operations Manager. Similar steps can be taken to monitor an Oracle database remotely with Blue Medora’s Management Pack for Oracle. This includes setting up the requisite credentials on the SQL server, creating relationships to vCenter, and a custom dashboard that shows SQL performance for vCenter.
