Send NSX Edge Gateway Statistics to Graphite

To monitor VMware NSX Edge Gateways I want to send interface statistics to my Graphite installation. NSX Manager comes with a REST API that allows to pull information in XML or JSON format. I’ve created a script that pulls Interface, Firewall and Load Balancer statistics from all ESGs and sends them to a Carbon Relay. This allows to create universal custom dashboards with Grafana for example.

Configure Edge Load Balancing in NSX

An Edge Services Gateway allows to connect services running on Logical Switches outside of NSX based networks. I’ve explained the base installation from zero to the first ESG here. This post explains how to connect Web servers running on logical networks VXLAN to the outside.

I recently worked on a very interesting integration between VMware NSX and Trend Micro Deep Security, the integration has the ability for Trend Micro Deep Security to auto quarantine a VM by applying an NSX Tag to the VM.

NSX – Availability and Redundancy

vSphere administrators normally have two great fears, failure of Storage and failure in the network layer, as both of these can result in 100s or 1000s of virtual machines simultaneously going off line.

VMware NSX 6.2 Beginners Guide – From Zero to…

VMware NSX is the SDDC technology of the future. What ESX was once for Servers, NSX is now for Networks. I highly encourage everyone to make yourselves familiar with this technology. NSX with all its features is quite complex, but the entry point is quite simple and requires only basic vSphere and networking skills. This beginners guide explains how to deploy NSX in your homelab even with limited physical ressources by downsizing NSX Manager and NSX Controller VMs. The guide starts at zero and quickly explains how to deploy NSX and connect your first Virtual Machine to a VXLAN based logical switch that is able to communicate to the physical world through an NSX Edge Gateway.

So I have just finished a week in Munich on an internal NSX design & deploy course which had some great content. I have made a few notes and wanted to very briefly blog those, mainly for my benefit but also in the hope they may be useful or interesting to others as well.

NSX – Transport Zone

Next up is creating a Transport Zone! Transport Zones are a way to define which clusters/hosts are be able to see and participate in the virtual network that are being configured. Its like a container that houses NSX Logical Switches along with their details which is then assigned to a collection of ESXi hosts that should be able to communicate with each other across the physical network infrastructure.
