Security for the New Battlefield @VMwareNSX
What will be our security challenge in the coming decade? Running trusted services even on untrusted infrastructure. That means protecting the confidentiality and integrity of data as it moves through the network. One possible solution – distributed network encryption – a new approach made possible by network virtualization and the software-defined data center that addresses some of the current challenges of widespread encryption usage inside the data center.
.@VMware Perspective – Go Away Zombie NIC!!! (via Glick’s Gray Matter)
Hi friends, I was doing some NIC manipulation on one of my virtual machines for some Horizon View testing I was doing. After I finished changing the NIC on the golden image I did some work on the guest OS, powered it off and took a snapshot so I could point Horizon View to the new image. After I started cloning the new desktops I realized I had forgot to change the NIC back so the desktops could talk to my private network. Crud!
Significant Performance Improvements Come to the @VMwarevSphere Web Client 5.5 Update 3
Over the course of the previous few years we’ve seen a steady improvement in the vSphere Web Client . VMware has been listening to the feedback coming in from our field, partners, and customers. And the feedback is that the vSphere Web Client in vCenter Server 6.0 and 6.0 Update 1 has been a really great step forward in terms of User Experience (UX). With that in mind, many of the improvements of the 6.0 vSphere Web Client have been “backported” to the vSphere Web Client in vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3 .

ESXi Change Block Tracking patch released
Yesterday, 2015-11-25, VMware released a patch that will solve the ESXi 6.0 Change Block Tracking (CBT) problem where virtual machines backed up using CBT could experience the following problems: Inconsistent virtual machine backups The CBT API call QueryDiskChangedAreas() API call can sometimes return incorrect changed sectors, which results in inconsistent incremental virtual machine backups. Get ready for NSX phase 0: Migrate from a vSphere Standard to a distributed switch
The distributed switch (vDS) is a really nice piece of software within the vSphere environment. It offers a variety of very useful features (NIOC, Health Check, Central management, LACP, LBT, Netflow, and so many (features with fancy abbreviations) more). Especially if you want to move to NSX the distributed switch is mandatory. Since analytics showed me that views about my vDS blogposts are increasing it seems that there is a demand for the vDS within our virtualized environments (it’s still an enterprise+ only feature)

Synology: Configuring Time Machine and Quotas
Time machine is a great piece of backup software that comes with Macs. How Time Machine works is that it backs up based on a policy until there is no space left on the destination. When space is depleted, Time Machine deletes the oldest backups. While the process makes sense, it does raise the question […] The post Synology: Configuring Time Machine and Quotas appeared first on SFlanders.net by Steve Flanders.

vSphere Upgrade Saga: Upgrading to vSphere 6.0 U1
To keep vSphere installs secure, it is often necessaryto patch or upgrade them in a specific order, as outlined in KB 2109760, which has been our guide for the last few parts of our upgrade saga. However, patching vCenter 6.0 vCSA is not as easy as it looks. The instructions in the online manuals are only apropos … Continue reading vSphere Upgrade Saga: Upgrading to vSphere 6.0 U1 → The post vSphere Upgrade Saga: Upgrading to vSphere 6.0 U1 appeared first on AstroArch Consulting, Inc.
Long-term self-signed certs
While I’m a big proponent of using an enterprise-class certificate authority—either based on internal offline root/online issuing or public CAs—there are some instances when using a self-signed cert fits the bill. Unfortunately, most of the tools for creating a self-signed cert have defaults that result in less-than-stellar results: the digest algorithm is sha1, the cert is likely to have a 1024-bit key, and the extensions that define the cert for server and/or client authentication are…Read More

VMware Samples Exchange goes into beta
When searching for scripts that relate to VMware (PowerCLI, Perl VILib, etc), you usually end up on a blog or a forum post somewhere, probably pointing towards GitHub for an example script. VMware themselves didn’t have a proper place for example scripts, like most vendors have in their developer centers. But an announcement on the VMware Community Podcast said that they are finally coming around to it and release a beta of the new VMware Samples Exchange. The VMware Samples Exchange (SVE) is…Read More
