How healthy is your vSphere environment?

One common question I get from customers is how to prove that there are not hidden warning lurking around in the log files. As you know, vSphere produces a lot of logs. I shared how you can check performance issue here, so I will complement it here.

Migrating OS X VMs from VMware Fusion 7 Pro to…

A new feature that appeared in VMware Fusion 7 Pro was its new ESXi management. This included the ability to upload VMs from Fusion directly to an ESXi server. However, when I tried to upload OS X VMs something seemed to go wrong. The upload would work, but the OS X VM would then hang on boot.

VMware VCSA – 3 Ways to Activate SSH

Today’s post we’ll show you different ways to activate SSH in VMware VCSA (vCenter Server Linux Appliance). VMware VCSA – 3 Ways to Activate SSH is today’s topic. You might already know all this. You perhaps rolled VCSA in your production environment already and you have your own experience. Never mind, this post targets VMware users who do not know much about VCSA, they did not have time to dig around or are purely Windows admins that did not have time to check it out. Let’s get started.

VMware VCSA – How to check running services?

We have covered 3 ways to activate SSH in VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) in our previous post – VMware VCSA – 3 Ways to Activate SSH. Today’s post we will check for the services running on the VCSA and we will see what to do if we don’t have an access via GUI. Usually, the reason that GUI won’t work is that one of the services is not running and needs to be started. But how to do when there is no easy access to start those services?

The Virtual Environment Integration (VE Integration) provides protection of VMs in virtual server environments. It is used o integrate HPE Data Protector with various virtualization environments, currently VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. For Citrix XenServer is a script solution available. I will focus on VMware vSphere.

Setting up VVOLs on HP 3PAR

As I’ve recently brought a HPE 3PAR 7200 into production with an ESXi 6.0 U2 cluster I thought what a better time than now to check out just how VVOLs are implemented by HPE. Although the tasks to do so aren’t difficult by any means I find the documentation around doing so is a bit scattered in different KB’s and documents between VMware and HPE, especially if you have upgraded to their latest firmware (3.2.2 MU2).

If you install ESXi on a microSD card and if you use HP Proliant Servers you may be interested in the “HP Dual 8GB MicroSD Enterprise Midline USB” (HP P/N: 741281-002). This dual-microSD card module provides data redundancy through a mirrored RAID 1 configuration. You connect the module to the internal USB port and install ESXi as usual!

One of my customers recently found that their ESXi hosts were not uniformly configured for syslog shipping, so asked me to help them audit their environment. They have hundreds of ESXi hosts, so going through the advanced settings in the GUI for each of their hundreds of hosts didn’t seem like the best approach… PowerCLI to the rescue!

PowerShell, Syslog & LogInsight

As part of a planning process to deploy LogInsight and looking at different use cases, we thought it might be good to be able to send log data from PowerShell scripts to LogInsight, this could be purely info messages or detailed errors that inline with the rest of the data visible in LogInsight would make troubleshooting that bit easier.

Performance management and capacity management are the two top-most issues faced by enterprise IT when doing virtualization. Until the first edition of the book, there was no in-depth coverage on the topic to tackle the issues systematically. The second edition expands the first edition, with added information and reorganizing the book into three logical parts.

Some time ago, I did a PowerCLI Series. There was the getting started in Part 1, followed by Part 2, Part 3, and in Part 4 we looked at getting vCheck working. That was updated yesterday BTW. After recently playing with some very cool stuff, I realized I needed to add anther chapter to my PowerCLI Series.
