VMware VSAN 6.2 Performance & Storage savings

Just a quick post to share some very interesting performance stats observed on my home lab VSAN cluster (Build details here). The VSAN datastore is in addition to a few NFS datastores also mounted on the same hosts using an external Synology SAN.

VMware VCSA – Find services information

Hello Folks, In my previous article, we spoke about how to configure a login banner for vSphere Web Client in vSphere 6.0 Update 2. Continuing the series with the VMware VCSA, we will look at how to find information related to the services on the VCSA. Hence, the title of the article, VMware VCSA Find services information.

Design Guide for VMware NSX running with a…

This document provides guidance for networking and virtualization architects interested in taking advantage of the full functionality of VMware NSX while utilizing Cisco ACI for underlay network functionality. While neither solution has a dependency on each other, there are dependencies to ensure interoperability. This paper discusses the fundamental building blocks of NSX with VMware ESXi and recommended underlay configurations with Cisco’s ACI.

One common question I get from customers is how to prove that there are not hidden warning lurking around in the log files. As you know, vSphere produces a lot of logs. I shared how you can check performance issue here, so I will complement it here.

Last NLVMUG I was talking about stretched clusters. My presentation elaborated somewhat on how VMware NSX can help you deal with challenges that arise when deploying a stretched cluster solution. In this blogpost I want to have a closer look at this specific topic.

A new feature that appeared in VMware Fusion 7 Pro was its new ESXi management. This included the ability to upload VMs from Fusion directly to an ESXi server. However, when I tried to upload OS X VMs something seemed to go wrong. The upload would work, but the OS X VM would then hang on boot.

VMware VCSA – 3 Ways to Activate SSH

Today’s post we’ll show you different ways to activate SSH in VMware VCSA (vCenter Server Linux Appliance). VMware VCSA – 3 Ways to Activate SSH is today’s topic. You might already know all this. You perhaps rolled VCSA in your production environment already and you have your own experience. Never mind, this post targets VMware users who do not know much about VCSA, they did not have time to dig around or are purely Windows admins that did not have time to check it out. Let’s get started.

VMware VCSA – How to check running services?

We have covered 3 ways to activate SSH in VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) in our previous post – VMware VCSA – 3 Ways to Activate SSH. Today’s post we will check for the services running on the VCSA and we will see what to do if we don’t have an access via GUI. Usually, the reason that GUI won’t work is that one of the services is not running and needs to be started. But how to do when there is no easy access to start those services?

Recovering from a full VSAN datastore scenario

We had an interesting event happen on one of our lab servers this weekend. One of the hosts in our four node cluster hit an issue, which meant that the storage on that host was no longer available to the VSAN datastore. Since VSAN auto-heals, it attempted to re-protect as many VMs as possible. However, since we chose to ignore one of the health check warnings to do with limits, we ended up with a full VSAN datastore.

Setting up VVOLs on HP 3PAR

As I’ve recently brought a HPE 3PAR 7200 into production with an ESXi 6.0 U2 cluster I thought what a better time than now to check out just how VVOLs are implemented by HPE. Although the tasks to do so aren’t difficult by any means I find the documentation around doing so is a bit scattered in different KB’s and documents between VMware and HPE, especially if you have upgraded to their latest firmware (3.2.2 MU2).
