I upgraded the home lab to vsphere 6.5 all around, so this was my first time I had a chance to see the new VCSA 6.5 has some really cool new features that I am sure readers will find useful, it now has full backup and restore capability baked right into the appliance. There is no plugin to download or install which is a very nice addition to the suite of available tools us administrators have to fall back on in case of some sort of failure. We will walk through the process of taking a backup as well as the restore process to get a closer look at how this works.

VMware vSAN 6.6 launched – so What’s New?
Earlier this year it was announced that vSAN had grown to over 7000 customers since launch, which is a pretty decent number given the product went GA just over 3 years ago and we’re on the 6th iteration! What’s even more impressive is how quickly VMware are turning these updates around (almost every 6 months we get an update of sorts), we only got vSAN 6.5 at VMworld last year and 6 months later we now have version 6.6 – what’s funny is half my customers haven’t even started implementing their 6.5 upgrade plan yet and now they will have to re-write that plan…. Lol… =)

One of the major storage enhancements that was introduced in vSphere 5.1 as part of the new I/O Device Management (IODM) framework was the addition of SMART (Self Monitoring, Analysis And Reporting Technology) data for monitoring FC, FCoE, iSCSI, SAS protocol statistics, this is especially useful for monitoring the health of an SSD device. Historically, there was not a public vSphere API to consume this information and customers had to rely on ESXCLI which is not very friendly from a programmatic standpoint.

Managing NVMe Devices Using the vSphere Client
I’ve had the chance to work quite extensively with NVMe devices lately. I’ve found them extremely easy to install into my ESXi host and easy to manage within vCenter, and their overall performance has been outstanding. During my time working with the devices, I’ve had the chance to poke and prod around to investigate them. What follows are some of the more useful and interesting things I’ve been able to discover about NVMe devices using the various vSphere 6.5 Web clients.
