New Release: PowerCLI 6.5.1

It’s PowerCLI release day and this is a significant one! This new release of PowerCLI is versioned at 6.5.1 rather than what you probably expected which would be 6.5 R2 (following on from our last release). We have made this change in order to fall in line with the best practices for being used in the PowerShell Gallery!

Getting started w/the new PowerCLI 6.5.1…

One of the things that I am most excited about from an Automation standpoint with the vSAN 6.6 release is that customers using PowerCLI will now have complete access to the vSAN Management API which we had initially introduced back in vSphere 6.0 Update 2. In PowerCLI 6.5R1, customers only had access to high level vSAN cmdlets which did a pretty good job covering the broad set of vSAN functionality. However, it did not expose the complete vSAN Management API and this has been something many customers have been asking about.

With vSAN 6.2 this feature and functionality became a core art of the product in the form of the Health UI which can be found within the Monitor Tab, under VSAN and Health. Dozens of proactive configuration and state checks are made. The list of checks has expanded in new versions of vSAN to help proactively alert users to potential risks in their environment.

In a previous blog, we learnt how stateful containers orchestrated by Kubernetes can leverage storage exposed by vSphere (vSAN, VMFS, NFS) by using standard Kubernetes volume, persistent volume and dynamic provisioning primitives.

Nominations for the 2017 Top vBlog voting…

Just like prior years in addition to the traditional top 50 voting I’m opening it up to allow voting in specific categories as well to help distinguish certain types of blogs. To do this I have created a form to allow you to nominate your blog or website for one of the categories that I have defined if your blog fits one or more of the categories, if it does not then don’t nominate it as all blogs on the vLaunchPad will automatically be included in the general top blog voting.

Disk format change going from 6.x to vSAN 6.6?

Disk format change going from 6.x to vSAN 6.6?

Disk format change going from 6.x to vSAN 6.6?

Internally I received a comment around the upgrade to 6.6 and the disk format version change. When you upgrade to 6.6 also the version of disk changes, it goes to version 5. In the past with these on-disk format changes a data move was needed and the whole disk group would be reformat. When going from vSAN 6.2 (vSphere 6.0 U2 that is!) to vSAN 6.6 there is no data move needed. The update is simply a metadata update, and on the average cluster will take less than 20 minutes.

In this post, we’ll explore a new vSAN 6.6 feature allowing you to deploy vSAN via VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) easily to greenfield environments, without the need to allocate a storage space for the VCSA on some temporary local datastore. Note that nested environments are not supported for production environments, but allows a very good learning and homelabbing. So this post will walk you through the VMware vSAN 6.6 Nested Lab Deployment DEMO.

My DockerCon 2017 Day #2

This is day #2 of DockerCon 2017. If you want to read my impressions of DockerCon 2017 Day #1, you can find it here. Today, as well as attending the keynote, some breakout sessions and visiting the expo, I wanted to highlight a couple of VMware announcements that were made in this space yesterday. First of all, we announce the release of vSphere Integrated Containers v1.1. The big-ticket item in VIC 1.1 is that the key items of VIC Engine are now merged into a single OVA appliance for ease of deployment. As well as that, we also released Photon Platform v1.2. The big-ticket item here, in my opinion, is support for Kubernetes v1.6. But there are a bunch of additional improvements other than those outlined here, so check out the links for…Read More

9 Tools You Should Be Using in Your VMware…

One of the many things we do as TAMs is ensure that our customers don’t have “shelfware” lying around. If we spend money on something, we want to use it, right? What about software or tools that are free or included as part of a purchase, but are not well publicized? As we start a new year, I thought it would be a great idea to introduce some of these free or lesser-known tools, to give them a little time in the spotlight and hopefully help you get even more value out of your VMware® investments.
