SuperMicro vs Intel NUC

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to William Lam (http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/) and Alan Renouf (http://www.virtu-al.net/) about their exciting USB to SDDC demonstration, they were using an Intel NUC to deploy a VMware SDDC environment to a single node using VSAN. I offered them the opportunity to test out the same capability with one of my SuperMicro E200-8D servers and they took me up on the opportunity. Since then I have been approached by a number of people with requests for information about why I chose to go with the SuperMicro E200 for my home lab over the Intel NUC. I’ve never written a blog before but I thought this might be a good way to “cut out the middle man” so to speak. So here it goes, my reasons for why I chose the…Read More

vSAN – Check VM Storage Policy & Compliance

As I continue to work with vSAN I discover there’s way more to do than just move some VMs over and you’re on your way. With multiple vSAN clusters each with different configurations I needed a way to monitor the current setup and check for changes. While creating a simple script to check which VM Storage Policy is assigned to each VM isn’t very difficult, a creating a script to check the storage policy of VMs across multiple vSAN datastores proved to be a little more difficult.

vCenter 6.5 Performance: what does 6x mean?

As a senior performance engineer who focuses on vCenter, and as one of the presenters of VMworld Session INF8108 (listed in the top-right corner of the slide above), I have received a number of questions regarding the “6x” and “2x scale” labels in the slide above. This blog is an attempt to explain these numbers by describing (at a high level) the performance improvements for vCenter in 6.5. I will focus specifically on the vCenter Appliance in this post.

Access Internal REST APIs in vR Ops with…

The following blog post originated on the personal blog of VMware Sr. Systems Engineer, Vinith Menon. With his permission, I am reposting this content here on the official VMware Cloud Management blog. In this post, Vinith provides a way to access the vRealize Operations internal APIs via Powershell. The public APIs can be accessed through the PowerCLI module for vRealize Operations, but there are some useful APIs to explore in the internal API set. Be aware that internal APIs are subject to change or removal with any new release, so use at your own risk.
