Project USB to SDDC – Part 1

A couple of weeks back, Alan Renouf and I co-presented at the Sydney and Melbourne VMUG UserCon, here are some great write-ups about the events here and here. We were very honored to have been invited out and to also deliever the closing keynote. Having traveled halfway around the world, we thought it was only fitting to share something really special.

Sure, you can live in a studio apartment and use your couch both for sitting and sleeping, but wouldn’t you rather have a one-bedroom apartment and stretch out? That’s the theory behind our dual monitor support. We’ve built a tech preview of dual monitor support into HTML Access in VMware Horizon 7.1.

Top Three Lightweight Linux VMs for VMware…

For VMware vSphere Lab testing you need testing VM. I’ve gathered Top Three Lightweight Linux Distros which can be used as testing VMs in a VMware lab environment. A testing VM is a VM which is not a filer or other type of VM that provides core network services for your lab environment (DC, DNS, DHCP firewall… ). It’s just a VM to test vSphere features like HA, vMotion, FT etc…. So this VM must be as small as possible to consume as less resources as possible.

VMFS vs. RDM – Fight!

The question often comes up, when should I use Raw Device Mappings (RDMs) instead of traditional VMFS/VMDK virtual disks. The answer for this usually is, always use VMFS unless you fit into specific use cases. An RDM is raw LUN that is presented directly to a VM instead of creating a traditional virtual disk on a VMFS datastore. Because a VM is directly accessing a LUN there is a natural tendency to think that a RDM would provide better performance as a VM is reading/writing directly to a LUN and not having to deal with the overhead of the VMFS file system. While you might think that, it’s not the case, RDM’s provide the same performance levels as a VM on VMFS does. To prove this VMware performed testing and published a white paper way…Read More

Identifying controllers and drivers for vSAN

One of the critical components on a vSAN environment is it’s I/O controller’s and flash drivers and firmwares, VMware provides two sets of guidelines, one for general purpose and one specific for vSAN purpose, and they are NOT mandatorily the same.

Using PowerCLI to get Horizon view status & events

So two weeks ago I had a nice little post about talking to Horizon View using PowerCLI. I also promised to be digging a bit more into PowerCLI by grabbing the script posted on the VMware blog and editing it a little to my taste. It’s a very useful script they have on there but still I prefer to know what might have caused the issues. I decided I needed to know who the last user was that used the desktop and the last entry into the eventlog and the time of that log. So actually most code used talks to the eventlog database, something already available pre PowerCLI 6.5 but what I hardly ever used.
