Yellow Bricks: Looking for the VROps VSAN Content Pack?
I just noticed the link for the VROps VSAN Content Pack had changed and it isn’t easy to find through google either. Figured I would post it quickly so at least it is indexed and easier to find. Also including the LogInsight VSAN content pack link for your convenience:
VSAN 6.2 Disk Format Upgrade Fails
I’ve been doing quite a bit of VSAN deployments and upgrades lately. When upgrading up to version 6.1, I did not encounter any issues, luckily. Upgrading VSAN cluster (vSphere) to 6.2 also very smooth; however, upgrading the disk format from version 2 or 2.5 to version 3 has been a daunting task so far. I have an 80% failure rate on this type of upgrade. Here are some of the errors I came across.
Heads Up: OVF/OVA always deployed as Thick on VSAN when using vSphere Web Client
Just wanted to give folks a heads up on an issue that a colleague of mines recently identified when provisioning Virtual Appliances (OVF/OVA) onto a VSAN datastore when using the vSphere Web Client. He found that regardless of the VSAN Storage Policy that was selected, whether it is the default VSAN Storage Policy or a custom one, the Virtual Appliance will always be Thick provisioned.
How to enable the Managed Object Browser (MOB) for ESXi 6.0 Hosts
In the course of investigations for a support request I tried to connect to the Managed Object Browser (MOB) of an ESXi 6 Host as I am used to from ESXi 5.x Hosts.
Kindle version of Essential Virtual SAN (6.2) available now!
Just noticed the Kindle version of Essential Virtual SAN (6.2), second edition, is available now! We decided to go for an “e-book” first model to get it to market as quick as possible. I hope you will enjoy the book as much as Cormac and I did writing it. Pick it up!
Virtual Blocks: Scale up VMware Virtual SAN to scale down risk (Part 2)
This is part 2 of the series. Now for our next example we wanted to look at what would happen if 3 hosts were lost simultaneously while using FTT=2 what would the impact be.
vPentathlon: VCAP-DCV Deploy Objective 2.3
Finally we got to the troubleshooting part!. In this post i will ONLY suggest some ideas to look for information. at this point we need to have a good understanding on how storage works with vSphere 6.
History of vSphere Storage Size Limitations
This seems like a straightforward topic. If you are on vSphere 6 you can create VMFS datastores and VM disks as big as 64TB (62TB for VM disks to be precise). The reality is, not all customers are running the latest and greatest for various reasons.
vPentathlon: VCAP-DCV Deploy Objective 3.1
We are now in the third section of the blueprint , this section is the Networking part and in the following posts we are going to discuss how we Deploy and Manage a vSphere 6.x Network Infrastructure
VMware app volumes 3.0 doing UEM – deep dive
VMware released app volumes a while ago, today I thought it was time to do a deep dive and see what they created. Strangely we now have two app volumes versions, the 2.5 and the 3.0 version. Customers on version 2.10 are not advised to go to 3.0, which is odd as everyone was expecting a new version that would be the successor of the 2.10 version. Customers can’t upgrade the appstacks to the 3.0 version so they would need to rebuild.
VAAI XCOPY not being used with Powered-On Windows VM
This is an issue I discovered along with my good friend and former colleague Drew Tonnesen a few years back which has cropped up a few times in recent days. I noticed there wasn’t really any information about it online, so made sense to put a quick post together.
VCDX – Advice to Employers
This is my recommendation for employers who have staff that recently achieved VCDX or Multi-VCDX certification. This is the culmination of my experiences and thoughts, including the outcome of conversations I have had with like-minded individuals within the industry.
TechTarget: Users give thumbs-up to lower-end versions of VMware’s NSX
After almost three years of tepid acceptance from users, two new lower-end versions of VMware’s NSX network offering have stirred interest among some users.
that virtual boy: VMware’s new Virtual Technical Advisor (VTA) Service
Anyone familiar with VMware’s Technical Account Manager (TAM) services knows the benefits to having such a resource as your advocate. Our customers gave TAM services a Net Promotor Score (NPS) of 67.5%, which is incredibly high for such a paid service. We’re in an age where great software paired with great services is the best way to squeeze the most value out of your investments. Adopting new technologies, embracing the Cloud, exploring hyper converged infrastructure can be daunting tasks. VMware wants you to be confident in your endeavors and that’s where the Technical Account Manager and Virtual Technical Advisor services come in!
Yellow Bricks: I have memory pages swapped, can vSphere unswap them?
“I have memory pages swapped out to disk, can vSphere swap them back in to memory again” is one of those questions that comes up occasionally. A while back I asked the engineering team why we don’t “swap in” pages when memory contention is lifted. There was no real good answer for it other than it was difficult to predict from a behavioural point of view. So I asked what about doing it manually? Unfortunately the answer was: well we will look in to it but it has no real priority it this point.
VMWerni: Change OS (from Windows 2008 to Windows 2012 R2) of vCenter 5.5 – Change vCenter 5.5 SSO architecture, virtualize a physical vCenter 5.5
The following checklist describes the process of migration the vCenter 5.5 OS (for example from Windows 2008 to Windows 2012 R2) by actually re-installing a fresh vCenter 5.5 – using the exsitsing vCenter database, inventory database and certificates. A follwoing step could be to update this “refreshed” vCenter 5.5 to vCenter 6.0. – And yes I am talking about Windows vCenter to Windows vCenter I am not talking about vCenter appliance.
NSX LoadBalancer – character “/” is not permitted in server name
This was an odd error that a colleague brought to me while testing automation around the configuration of an NSX Edge.
