Business-critical application on VMware…

Business-critical applications need a virtualization platform that’s reliable and flexible while providing the high performance that users demand. The software-defined data center (SDDC) with VMware vSphere 6, all-flash VMware Virtual SAN, and VMware NSX can help you deliver strong performance for business-critical apps, and maximum uptime through workload mobility.

VSAN 6.2 Part 12 – VSAN 6.1 to 6.2 Upgrade Steps

I’ve already written a few articles around this, notably on stretched cluster upgrades and on-disk format issues. In this post, I just wanted to run through the 3 distinct upgrade steps in a little more detail, and show you some useful commands that you can use to monitor the progress. In a nutshell, the steps are:

Monitoring, understanding, and optimizing compute performance is a crucial aspect of any IT environment, and it becomes even more important with virtualization. VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) helps you realize the benefits of virtualization without sacrificing visibility into the compute layer. vROps also makes optimizations easy with performance trend analysis, health badges, project planning, and more.

My View 7 upgrade

Hi there, It is now time to upgrade my lab to Horizon 7. The info below will help you to do the same. Important note is that I am just doing the View 7 upgrade and not implementing anything else – like True SSO. That will perhaps come later. Like in my 6.2 upgrade I am not ready to start using the Access Point appliance – but still have the Windows based Security Server. The hardest thing of this upgrade – for me – was to find the bits. Life of a vExpert though. Lets get started!

Nominations for the 2016 Top vBlog voting…

Just like prior years in addition to the traditional top 50 voting I’m opening it up to allow voting in specific categories as well to help distinguish certain types of blogs. To do this I have created a form to allow you to nominate your blog or website for one of the categories that I have defined if your blog fits one or more of the categories, if it does not then don’t nominate it as all blogs on the vLaunchpad will automatically be included in the general top blog voting.

Log Insight + Netflow = Awesome

This is just another awesome use case for Log Insight. I have setup the vSphere Distributed switch to send netflow to a netflow proxy which then sends them as syslog messages to Log Insight. The reason for this is that Log Insight can’t ingest netflow messages natively.

VMware CPU Co-Stop and SQL Server Performance

Not too many people know about the intricacies of virtualization CPU scheduling and its impact on the performance of the VMs, so application owners out there – listen up! I’ve written about Ready Time (VMware ESXi) / Wait Time Per Dispatch (Microsoft Hyper-V) in the past, but a different challenge arises with VMs that have large vCPU count footprints. It’s called CPU Co-Stop, and it can devastate your application’s performance in a VM.

Reasons for this was failed attempts to delete Horizon View VDIs even though their corresponding vCenter Server VMs were successfully deleted. Below is a print screen from the Horizon View UI showing the state of the Horizon View Desktop pools.
