New Book – #VMware Performance and Capacity Management – Second Edition
Performance management and capacity management are the two top-most issues faced by enterprise IT when doing virtualization. Until the first edition of the book, there was no in-depth coverage on the topic to tackle the issues systematically. The second edition expands the first edition, with added information and reorganizing the book into three logical parts.

Some time ago, I did a PowerCLI Series. There was the getting started in Part 1, followed by Part 2, Part 3, and in Part 4 we looked at getting vCheck working. That was updated yesterday BTW. After recently playing with some very cool stuff, I realized I needed to add anther chapter to my PowerCLI Series.
#VMware App Volumes 3.0 Doing UEM – Deep Dive
VMware released app volumes a while ago, today I thought it was time to do a deep dive and see what they created. Strangely we now have two app volumes versions, the 2.5 and the 3.0 version. Customers on version 2.10 are not advised to go to 3.0, which is odd as everyone was expecting a new version that would be the successor of the 2.10 version. Customers can’t upgrade the appstacks to the 3.0 version so they would need to rebuild.

There are many great papers about NSX in general: for example here & here and many others, the purpose of this demo is not to dive into everything that NSX does, Instead I have focused on one capability in particular and that is the intelligent grouping of NSX Service Composer with the Distributed Firewall (DFW) and how to utilize it to make life easier for SQL DBAs and security admins, its doesn’t have to be only SQL Server, it can be any other database or application for that matter but for this demo I am focusing on SQL Server.

vMotion traffic: Enables the VMkernel adapter to advertise itself to another host as the network connection where vMotion traffic is sent. The migration with vMotion to the selected host is not possible if the vMotion service is not enabled for any VMkernel adapter on the default TCP/IP stack, or there are no adapters using the vMotion TCP/IP stack. Adjust timeout value #ESXi Embedded Host Client
I love to use the ESXi Embedded Host Client next to vCenter in my lab. It’s quick, it provide most of the functionality and best of it all it has a functioning VM console when accessing it from a MAC. The ESXi Embedded Host Client time-out default is set to 15 minutes, but you can adjust this setting.

#vSphere 6.0 error “unable to create NFS datastore: specified key, name, or identifier already exists”
Trying to add a new NFS datastore in vSphere, the system displays the error message “Unable to create NFS datastore: specified key, name, or identifier already exists”. An NFS datastore mapped in a VMware cluster is not seen by some ESXi hosts and the attempt to map it again causes the error shown in the picture.
Platform Services Controller Topology Decision Tree
There have been several common themes recently when we’ve been talking to Customers, Partners, and our colleagues within VMware. One of those themes is that there has been quite an uptick in Customers planning their move to vSphere 6. A side effect of this is that there have been a deluge of discussions and questions around the Platform Services Controller. One of the many areas where we’re trying to do better at providing prescriptive information is with helping Customers design their vSphere 6 environment including the PSC.
Can I still provision VMs when a #VSAN Stretched Cluster site has failed?
A question was asked internally if you can still provision VMs when a site has failed in a VSAN stretched cluster environment. In a regular VSAN environment when you don’t have sufficient fault domains you cannot provision new VMs, unless you explicitly enable Force Provisioning, which most people do not have enabled.
