Using vRealize Log Insight Content Pack for…

Log data has a long history of being difficult to work with. Almost every system, component, and application can generate massive amounts of unstructured data just cryptic enough to dissuade the typical administrator from harnessing the value it holds. Much of the time, log data is viewed only when something isn’t working.

How vSAN Enables You to Scale to Tomorrow

While no technology is ever “future proof,” we all hope that any big technology purchase will last and give us a satisfactory return on our investment. We look for assurance that it can not only take advantage of the newest and flashiest applications and technologies, but also have the agility and extensibility to adopt newer and better technologies in the future.

Potential ESXi Host Preparation issues with NSX…

While working on updating my vGhetto Automated vSphere Lab Deployment script to add support for NSX 6.3 with vSphere 6.5, I ran into an issue with the Host Preparation step. Although the resolution turned out to be quite simple, it was very difficult to diagnose the problem.

NSX Growth and Success in 2016

Last week VMware hosted its Q4 2016 earnings call and shared financial results. VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger and the executive team have frequently highlighted VMware NSX growth and success on these calls. For Q4, NSX license bookings grew over 50 percent year-over-year. Annualizing our Q4 total bookings for NSX, it is now at a $1B run rate. With one month into 2017, we’d like to share more on NSX customer success in 2016.

With Network Insight, like the name suggests, it really opens your eyes. VMware IT can identify issues with our NSX deployments that we hadn’t been aware of. We have visibility into things that what would have been black holes in the past. We now have better control and tracking of our virtual distributed firewalls with vRNI enabling micro-segmentation planning. That’s a huge help when it comes to meeting audit and compliance requirements.

Horizon View API

VMware recently added an Horizon View API as part of the PowerCLi 6.5 R1 release, which allows customers to interact with Horizon without the need for using the User Interface (UI). Amazing as this new Horizon API is, it’s not as easy as the usual PowerCLi CmdLets we are used to using and I’ve personally found information/settings difficult to find using the API.

Update on Intel NUC 7th Gen (Kaby Lake) & ESXi 6.x

Intel just started shipping their i3 7th Gen (Kaby Lake) Intel NUCs and no surprise, Florian of virten.net has already gotten his hands on a unit for testing. The Intel NUCs is a very popular platform for running vSphere/vSAN-based home labs, especially for their price point and footprint. Last week, Florian discovered from his testing that the built-in network adapter on the 7th Gen NUC was not being detected by any of the ESXi installers and had published his findings here.

A couple of weeks ago in my NSX-v 6.3 and NSX-T 1.1 release post I focused around NSX-v features as that has become the mainstream version that most people know and work with…however NSX, in it’s Nicira roots has always been about multi-hypervisor and has always had an MH version that worked with Openstack deployments. The NSBU has big plans for NSX beyond vSphere and during the NSX vExpert session we got to see a little about how NSX-T will look beyond version 1.1.

Kubernetes on vSphere with kubernetes-anywhere

I already described how you can get started with Kubernetes natively on vSphere using the kube-up/kube-down mechanism. This was pretty straight-forward, but not ideal as it was not very reliable or easy to follow. Since writing that piece, Kubernetes have moved on to a new deployment mechanism called kubernetes-anywhere. In this post, I will show you how to deploy Kubernetes onto a vSphere environment with a vSAN datastore, using the kubernetes-anywhere utility.
