VMware – vSphere 6 Basics – Platform Services…

I’ve finally gotten some time to dig into the changes in vSphere 6 with regards to deployment options and architecture. I thought I’d do a few posts covering some key enhancements from VMware, paying particular attention to the Platform Service Controller (PSC) and VMware’s preferred deployment options. I haven’t received any briefings from VMware, so I can’t comment on what is coming in future releases. Note that most of this information was made available to me via access to VMware’s…Read More

In this post, I’m going to cover the installation of the Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) for Site Recovery Manager. When using array-based replication, this is an absolute must piece of software that the vendor providers as it enables SRM to integrate and work the specific array. The SRA needs to be installed into each SRM […] The post SRM with VMAX 20K Part VII: Installation of Storage Replication Adapters appeared first on vRyan.co.uk – Virtualization Blog.

VMware releases vRealize Production Test

Yesterday VMware released the vRealize Production Test which is an add-on tool to the vRealize Suite that you can use to monitor the production health of your vRealize Suite deployment from the initial deployment to the operational phase. By using vRealize Production Test, you can run a suite of tests from the command line using the API of the vRealize Suite components to assess and report on the health of those components. The vRealize Suite is a platform of data collection intensive applications used to govern and manage virtual and cloud infrastructure. In a production environment outages can range from loss of connectivity to one vCenter, to a complete inability to provision or monitor the environment. vRealize Production Test is a…Read More

VMware VSAN reusing SSD disks

#VMware VSAN reusing SSD disks

VMware VSAN reusing SSD disks

Ealier this week I’ve been configuring a new VSAN cluster. The old configuration was using hardware that wasn’t complying with the VMware vSAN HCL. We ordered new raid controllers and HDD’s and reused the SSD disks, as those where compliant with the HCL. Adding and configuring the new hardware went well and ESXi was installed without a problem. After doing some network configurations on the hosts it was time to turn on VSAN. And that is where I ran into an issue. The moment I turned on VSAN (manual mode) each host created a disk group containing the SSD’s present in the host. Each disk group however was showing only absent HDD’s. Seeing as I was using SSD’s from a previous configuration I wasn’t that suprised and tried removing the disk…Read More

Removing VMware Data Security after vShield to…

An existing vShield environment can be upgraded to a full NSX environment, as described in my VCIX post “Upgrade VMware NSX Components”. All vShield components can be upgraded, except for one; vShield Data Security. The documentation states: NSX Data Security does not support a direct upgrade. You must uninstall the current Data Security software before upgrading to NSX Manager. After NSX Manager is upgraded, you can install NSX Data Security version 6.0. If you upgraded to NSX Manager without uninstalling Data Security, you must do so using a REST call. A few days ago, someone came to me with an environment where this exact thing happened. They had upgraded to NSX for all its goodness, but had not removed Data Security and could not…Read More
