Compare and Contrast – VSAN and VVols -…

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to meet with a number of VMware customers in both Singapore and in the UAE. Most of the sessions were enablement and education type sessions, where there was a lot of white-boarding of VSAN (VMware’s hyper-converged infrastructure product) and Virtual Volumes (VVols – Software Defined Storage or SDS for the storage arrays). This wasn’t a sales session; I’m not in sales. The objective of these sessions was simply to educate. I guess when you are immersed in this stuff 24×7, it easy to fall into the trap of believing that everyone is well versed in this technology, and that’s simply not the case.

VMware Virtual SAN: The Technology And Its Future

As discussed in earlier posts, the latest version of Virtual SAN (v.6.2) announced on February 10, 2016 is the biggest release of the product since its debut in March 2014. The list of new features is impressive and makes Virtual SAN very competitive against the most sophisticated storage platforms in the market today. Indeed, with […] The post VMware Virtual SAN: The Technology And Its Future appeared first on VMware vSphere Blog .

7 Reasons VMware Virtual SAN Is Radically Simple

It is often that we hear technology solutions described as “revolutionary”, “incredible”, or “game-changing” and that list of adjectives could certainly go on. In some cases, those descriptions are fairly accurate while at other times, they tend to be a bit overstated. We here at VMware often use the term “radically simple” to describe Virtual SAN and I believe this flat out hits the nail on the head. Since the inception of Virtual SAN a couple of years ago, one of the main objectives has been to keep the management of Virtual SAN and the VMs running on Virtual SAN as simple as possible and, in my opinion, we have not only met that goal, but far exceeded it. Let’s look at seven examples.

One of the last things I wanted to look into after setting up my new VSAN 6.2 home lab on the new 6th Gen Intel NUC was to add a custom BIOS splash screen giving my system a personal touch. Updating the BIOS splash screen would require flashing the BIOS itself which gave me some concerns after hearing about the BIOS v33 issue […]

Hybrid vs All-flash VSAN, are we really getting…

For the last 12 months people have been saying that all-flash and hybrid configurations are getting really close in terms of pricing. During the many conversations I have had with customers it became clear that this is not always the case when they requested quotes from server vendors and I wondered why. I figured I would go through the exercise myself to see how close we actually are and to what we are getting close.

Virtual SAN is natively integrated with vSphere and it is configured with just a few mouse clicks. Since disks internal to the vSphere hosts are used to create a Virtual SAN datastore, there is no dependency on external shared storage. Virtual machines can be assigned specific storage policies based on the needs of the applications. These workloads benefit from dependable shared storage predictable performance and availability characteristics. The new release of Virtual SAN, version 6.2,…Read More

One of my all time favorite features of VSAN is still the ability to be able to “bootstrap” a VSAN Datastore starting with just a single ESXi node. This is especially useful if you would like to bootstrap vCenter Server on top of VSAN out of the box without having to require additional VMFS/NFS storage. This bootstrap method has been […]

VSAN 6.2 : Sparse Swap, what is it good for?

Advertise here with BSA I already briefly touched on Sparse Swap in my VSAN 6.2 launch article. Those of course are definitely the big ticket items for VSAN 6.2, there is no doubt.
