I’ve been doing quite a bit of VSAN deployments and upgrades lately. When upgrading up to version 6.1, I did not encounter any issues, luckily. Upgrading VSAN cluster (vSphere) to 6.2 also very smooth; however, upgrading the disk format from version 2 or 2.5 to version 3 has been a daunting task so far. I have an 80% failure rate on this type of upgrade. Here are some of the errors I came across.

Just wanted to give folks a heads up on an issue that a colleague of mines recently identified when provisioning Virtual Appliances (OVF/OVA) onto a VSAN datastore when using the vSphere Web Client. He found that regardless of the VSAN Storage Policy that was selected, whether it is the default VSAN Storage Policy or a custom one, the Virtual Appliance will always be Thick provisioned.

This week I had the pleasure to have a chat with Marc Huppert (VCDX181). Marc works for Computacenter in Germany as a Senior Consultant and Category Leader VMware Solutions. He primarily focuses on datacenter technology. I noticed a tweet from Marc that he was working on a project where they will be implementing a 60 site ROBO deployment. It is one of those use cases that I don’t get to see too often in Europe so I figured I would drop him a note. With the release of VSAN 6.2 (vSphere 6.0 Update 2), a new VSAN Management API has been introduced which covers all aspects of VSAN functionality including: complete lifecycle (install, upgrade, patch), monitoring (including VSAN Observer capabilities), configuration and troubleshooting. Although there is a well documented VSAN Management API Reference Guide which you can navigate around, I personally find it useful to be able to have a quick reference to all the APIs in on place which I can easily search and reference. This is especially true when I am learning about a new API.
