Top 4 Benefits of VMware Virtual SAN (As Told…

VMware Virtual SAN (VSAN) is radically simple, hyper-converged storage for virtualized environments. Hyper-converged Infrastructure (HCI) leverages the hypervisor to deliver compute, networking and shared storage from a single x86 platform. In addition to being incredibly simple to deploy and provision, Virtual SAN allows you to scale storage and compute resources, eliminating costly forklift upgrades. Every VSAN cluster can scale out one node at a time or scale up by adding capacity to existing hosts, and achieve over 8 PB of raw storage capacity.

How to tell if an ESXi host is a VSAN Witness…

I had received this question awhile back but I was only able to get to it recently. If you are not familiar with the VSAN Witness Virtual Appliance and its purpose, Cormac Hogan did an excellent write-up on the topic which you can find it here. The reason this question came up was that if you were to […]

VxRail: Hyper-Converged Infrastructure for…

When VMware and Dell EMC set out to engineer a software-defined data center (SDDC) building block capable of delivering a full private cloud solution, we knew that it would have to be powerful, compact and able to keep up with the speed of our customers. When we launched VxRail, our new hyper-converged infrastructure offering, we knew we had accelerated customers’ paths to the cloud. And when Dimension Data chose VxRail as the building block for its portable, trackside data center to support its performance cycling team, we knew we had accomplished our mission!

Bootstrapping VSAN without vCenter

I have completed 3 greenfield VSAN deployments now where we did not have any other storage to present to the hosts. This is a chicken and egg situation where you want to build vCenter to configure VSAN, but you don’t have storage yet…hmmm, VMware have a great document on this but I have tried to simply…Read More

A week ago we had a discussion on twitter about a scenario which was talked about at VMworld. VSAN stripes (How, When and Why?)

NumberOfDiskStripesPerObject, commonly referred to as stripe width, is the setting that defines the minimum number of capacity devices across which each replica of a storage object is distributed. Virtual SAN may actually create more stripes than the number specified in the policy for reasons will will discuss later. In the UI Striping will appear as “RAID 0” with the number of components being driven primarily by what the stripe width was set to.

Troubleshooting Virtual SAN 6.2 on disk…

https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2144881 – This video demonstrates how to troubleshoot Virtual San 6.2 upgrades which fail after 10% of the upgrade procedure. When upgrading VMware Virtual SAN (VSAN) to version 6.2, the Virtual SAN Disk Format Conversion task fails at 10%. In the vSphere Web Client, you see an error similar to: – A general system error occurred: Failed to realign following Virtual SAN objects, due to being locked or lack of vmdk descriptor file which requires manual fix The Convert disk format for Virtual SAN task fails with a General Virtual SAN error status. When upgrading the on-disk format, during the 10% – 15% phase, Virtual SAN realigns objects to prepare them for new features. The process is performed in two steps: – In…Read More
