Stateful Containers on vSphere with the…

If you analyze the list of most pulled images on Docker Hub, images for running data intensive workloads in containers are among the most used of the top 10-15 images. Mongo, MySQL, Redis, Postgres, etc. each have over 10 million pulls and this tells a story by itself. Additionally, containers do not meet the requirements for effortlessly running data intensive applications and persisting state. Containers lack security, data integrity, data protection, etc. all qualities which are currently available in the vSphere eco-system.

Harbor, an enterprise class registry server

With the GA release of vSphere Integrated Containers (aka VIC) on December, VMware also announced an enterprise class registry server based on the open source Docker Distribution that allows us to store and distribute container images in our datacenter. While VIC Engine (actually the core component of VIC) is great for providing a container runtime for vSphere, enterprise customers governed by strict regulations require a more private solution in order to store and manage container images rather than the default cloud-based registry service from Docker. Coming of Age in a Cross-Cloud World

A recent whitepaper from VMware argues that it was in 2006 when the first cloud services came to market and the term “cloud” found its way into business vernacular. Back then, some 29 million workloads were managed by IT teams worldwide, with just two percent managed in any kind of cloud (and most of that was Salesforce—we’ve come a long way since then).

VMware Cloud Foundation – Delete Workload Domain

In this video, I’ve completed the imaging and initial bring up process for the VMware Cloud Foundation instance. It includes two qualified top-of-rack switches, a management switch and 12 vSAN Ready Nodes. A four-node Management Domain is in place along with a five-node VI Workload Domain. Now, we’ll show how to automate the removal of a workload domain. Now, we’ll add capacity to the workload domain from available vSAN Ready Nodes in the VMware Cloud Foundation instance. There is a ton of automated goodness happening under the hood during the workload domain creation phase. Watch closely and you’ll catch the tasks being orchestrated across the integrated platform.
