Designing a networking platform for IaaS…

Based on my last post, you’ll understand some of the challenges that are faced with traditional approaches to datacenter networking so let’s get into the high-level conceptual design here of how we might solve one of these problems. Most service providers have or are at least familiar with using MPLS for customer segregation in a WAN scope as I alluded to in my previous datacenter networking article. What we want to do is simplify the provisioning and distribution of subnets to a customer’s virtual environment, all the way up to the WAN.

If you analyze the list of most pulled images on Docker Hub, images for running data intensive workloads in containers are among the most used of the top 10-15 images. Mongo, MySQL, Redis, Postgres, etc. each have over 10 million pulls and this tells a story by itself. Additionally, containers do not meet the requirements for effortlessly running data intensive applications and persisting state. Containers lack security, data integrity, data protection, etc. all qualities which are currently available in the vSphere eco-system.

New Mechanism for Unleashing vSAN Innovation

A major advantage of vSAN is that it is natively integrated with vSphere—in fact it’s the only vSphere-embedded storage solution available! As a result of this architecture customers benefit from management simplicity, high performance and a natural way to evolve to HCI. But up to now, that tight relationship also meant that vSAN releases were only available tied to major vSphere updates.

An overview of current storage vendor support…

VMware’s new external storage architecture, Virtual Volumes (VVols), turned 2 years old this month as it launched as part of vSphere 6.0. The new VASA specification for VVols has been under development by VMware for over 6 years and it’s up to storage vendors to set their own development pace for supporting it. In this post I’ll provide an update on how each storage vendor is positioned to support VVols, this is entirely based on what is published in the VVols HCL (see below figure) and some research I have done. It will not cover things like the capabilities and scalability for VVols that is up to each vendor to dictate what they are capable of doing with VVols and how many VVols that they can support on a storage array.

What is VMware Enhanced vMotion Compatibility…

I know many of you knows what that is, but this post is targeting people who do not or know a little bit, but they’re not sure if what they know is enough. If you’re experienced VMware admin you’ll won’t find probably anything you don’t already know. VMware Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) is a vSphere cluster feature which allows virtual machines (VMs) to use vMotion between hosts with different processors. (CPUs). The way that EVC works is basically masking the advanced capabilities of the newer CPUs in order to have the same level fo instructions across the whole VMware cluster.
