My time @VMware (A Love Story)

So, I’m sure I’ve made it very apparent over the past couple months that I made a transition in jobs. I left Dell Services and became a Sr. Pre-Sales SE in the NSBU @VMware. I knew since I started working with VMware products that I would eventually like to work at the “mothership”. I had always heard nothing but great things about the company. After my first couple months in, I can tell you insider information. It’s even better than anyone ever said.

Just wanted to do a short post about vmkmgmt_keyval, as I think most admins only uses this tool for getting HBA driver/firmware versions, but you get so much more than just that. There is different forms of statistics in there, per target, per lun and block size.

Tag-based Veeam Backups

As I teased in Using vCenter tags with PowerCLI, I want to explore how to use tags in a practical application. To refresh our memory, we looked at creating an Ownership category with individual tags in it, and limited VMs to having just one of the tags. We created a little script that defines our schema, in case we need to re-create it. We are going to work on a new category today for our backups. Specifically, Veeam backups, based on SDDC6282-SPO, Using vSphere tags for advanced policy-driven data protection as presented at VMworld 2015.

Disable Num Lock notification in VMware…

As a Consultant I travel a lot and I have pleasure to work with fantastic VMware Clients. Unfortunately for myself access to Clients infrastructure is granted via VPN (many times different software) and I am forced to use virtual machine to work. This is quite understandable and make sense for security point of view, but for myself being locked by VPN without Internet access isn’t great. Today post Disable Num Lock notification in VMware Workstation will show you how to fix this issue.

In my earlier post vCenter Server 6.* – Replacing SSL certificates with Enterprise VMCA I showed you how to use VMware Certificate Authority in Enterprise mode using subordinate Certificate Authority. Once the vCenter Server SSL certificates are replaced the next step is to Renew ESXi SSL certificates in vSphere Web Client in our environment.

Increase the performance of your Veeam backups…

If you ever tried to do any file operation via the management interface of an ESXi host, like uploading an ISO file or running a backup using Network Mode, you may know the management interface is not running at the full speed of the underlying network interface, and the bandwidth you end up using is only a percentage of the total available. This limit is designed to preserve the availability of the management interface, but still there are situations where this limit is a problem, and you would like to increase it. Hopefully, there’s a solution.

There is a lot of attention for PowerCLI for the day to day automation of your VMware infrastructure. But what if you don’t have or want Windows machines? When you are using your Mac or Linux machine for maintenance you have to create a virtual machine with Windows especially for PowerCLI.

Using the vSphere API to remotely generate ESXi…

This is a follow-up post from my previous article on how to run a script using a vCenter Alarm action in the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA). What I had demonstrated was using a pyvmomi (vSphere SDK for Python) script to be triggered automatically to generate a VMware Support Bundle for all ESXi hosts for a given vSphere Cluster. The one caveat that I had mentioned in the blog post was that the solution slightly differed from the original request which was to create an ESXi performance support bundle. However, the vSphere API only supports the creation of generic VMware Support Bundle which may not be as useful if you are only interested in collecting more granular performance stats for troubleshooting purposes.

Hot off the heels of WWDC, Apple has made available the next major update to it’s flagship operating system for Mac. With a new name, macOS, Apple seems to be getting away from the OS X moniker and aligning with the rest of the OS’s that it has in it’s bag: tvOS, iOS, watchOS, and now macOS.
